Polite Greetings

Jumping is a common thing that most dog like to do when they greet someone. However, there is an alternative to this. Teach your dog to sit! The important thing to remember is that your dog will receive no attention and affection until all 4 paws are on the floor. Having your dog sit for greetings teaches them an alternate behavior to jumping. They can't jump if they are sitting!

Here's how you can practice it. With your dog on a leash, and a patient, understanding guest at hand, ask your pup to sit. Have your guest approach your dog. If your dog stands or tries to jump, have the person turn around, cross their arms and ignore him. Have them be very boring. Once your dog is calm and sitting again, try again. You will need to instruct all your guests to ask your dog to sit. Have biscuits ready to hand to your guests. Guests must resist the temptation to pet, look at or push down the jumping canine. Remember, unless the dog sits, the attention goes away!
